The 30-Second Window Test: Is Your Bend Glass Damaged?
Wet a fingertip, drag it across the outside of a south-facing pane, then look through the glass at low sun. Grit, white haze, or a rainbow sheen means deposits have bonded to the surface. This test takes 30 seconds and tells you whether you need a clean, a restoration, or new glass.

The test, explained
Why a fingertip and low sun tell you more than a hose does
Most Bend homeowners judge their windows from inside, in the middle of the day, when overhead light hides everything. The damage that matters — mineral etching, pollen film, smoke residue — only shows at a low sun angle or under a fingertip. That is why a window can look fine at noon and terrible at 6 pm. The test below forces the two conditions that reveal the problem.
Pick the window that takes the most abuse: south- or west-facing, near a sprinkler head, on a home with well or canal irrigation . That is the pane that fails first. If it passes, the rest of the house almost certainly does too.
Run the test in the evening or early morning when the sun is below 30 degrees. Stand inside, look out through the glass toward the light, then step outside and do the fingertip drag. Two observations, thirty seconds, and you know exactly which result below you are dealing with.
The results
What each result means and what to do next
Every window in Bend lands in one of these categories. The category decides the service — not the age of the house.
Smooth and clear
Glass feels slick, no haze at low sun. The pane is healthy. A standard residential clean twice a year keeps it that way.
Gritty under the finger
Pollen, volcanic dust, or construction debris is sitting on the surface. Each irrigation cycle grinds it deeper. Book a clean before the next wet-dry cycle etches it.
White haze at low sun
Mineral deposits from sprinklers or well water have bonded to the glass. Household cleaners will not touch it. This needs professional hard water restoration with a patch test first.
Rainbow or oily sheen
Wildfire smoke residue or hydrocarbon film. It smears when wiped dry. Needs a proper wet wash with a degreasing solution, not a dry cloth.
Fog between the panes
The insulated glass seal has failed and moisture is trapped inside the unit. No cleaning reaches it. The glass unit needs replacement — we document it so you can prioritize.
Fine scratches in a pattern
Someone wiped grit across the glass with a dry towel or paper. Scratches are permanent. Stop using dry cloths and switch to flood-then-squeegee.
Why Bend fails this test
What makes Central Oregon glass fail faster than anywhere else
Four local conditions push windows from smooth to hazed in a single season. Knowing which one is hitting your glass tells you which service to book.
Untreated irrigation water
Bend city tap water tests soft at roughly 1 to 1.5 grains per gallon. Irrigation from canals and private wells does not. A sprinkler that hits the bottom third of a window every morning and bakes dry by noon deposits calcium and silica that bond within weeks. Hard water stain removal →
Juniper and ponderosa pollen
Juniper releases from late February and ponderosa pine follows through May. The yellow film bonds to glass the first time it gets damp and dries. It is the most common cause of a gritty test result in spring.
Late-summer wildfire smoke
Smoke deposits an oily particulate film that scatters light and creates the rainbow sheen at low sun. It is invisible at midday and obvious at 6 pm. Wiping it dry spreads it.
40-degree daily temperature swings
Bend routinely swings 40 to 50 degrees between overnight low and afternoon high from April through October. Each cycle stresses the perimeter seal on double-pane units and is the main reason seals fail earlier here than in Portland.
What it costs
What each test result costs to fix in Bend
The test result maps directly to a price bracket. Catching a problem one category early saves the most money.
01
Smooth or gritty — standard clean
A full interior and exterior residential clean runs $150 to $350 for most Bend homes. This resets the glass and removes surface grit before it etches.
02
White haze — restoration
Hard water restoration is quoted per pane after a free patch test. Most homes with sprinkler damage on 4 to 8 windows fall between $200 and $500 for restoration plus a standard clean.
03
Fog between panes — replacement
A failed insulated glass unit is replaced by a glass shop, not cleaned. Typical Bend cost is $150 to $400 per window for the sealed unit only, frame and hardware kept.

How it works
From test result to fixed glass in four steps
Step 1
Run the test and take two photos
One photo of the fingertip test, one looking through the glass at low sun. Text or email them with your address and rough window count.
Step 2
Get your category and price
We tell you which of the four results you have and quote a firm price the same day.
Step 3
Patch test on arrival
For haze results, we test a single pane with restoration compound before touching the rest. If it does not lift, you are not charged for restoration.
Step 4
Full clean and dry inspection
Every pane is checked once dry. If rain spots the exterior within 7 days, we return free.
Real questions
What Bend homeowners actually ask about hazy and gritty glass
Pulled from Central Oregon homeowner threads and answered for Bend conditions. No fluff — just what you need to decide.
“Just moved to Bend from Seattle. Why do my windows look chalky after two months when they never did before?”
Two reasons. First, Bend irrigation is often untreated canal or well water that carries far more dissolved mineral than Seattle rainwater. Second, the high-desert sun dries spray in minutes, which bakes minerals onto glass instead of letting them run off. Two months of morning sprinkler contact is enough to produce a chalky band on the lower third of any south-facing pane.
“Is the haze on my windows something I can scrub off, or is it inside the glass?”
Wet the pane with a hose. If the haze disappears while wet and returns as it dries, the deposit is on the surface and restoration removes it. If the pane looks identical wet and dry, the haze is between the panes — the insulated seal has failed and the unit needs replacement. Cleaning cannot reach it.
“Windows look fine during the day but terrible at sunset. Am I imagining it?”
No. Overhead midday light passes straight through and hides surface film. Low-angle sun at sunrise and sunset scatters off every deposit and streak on the glass. Sunset on west-facing glass is the harshest test a Bend window faces. If it looks bad at sunset, the film is real — it is just invisible at noon.
“I have a rainbow sheen on my windows after the August smoke. What is it?”
Wildfire smoke carries oily hydrocarbons that settle on exterior glass and scatter light into a rainbow at low sun. The film smears when wiped with a dry cloth. It needs a wet wash with a degreasing glass solution and a squeegee. Most Bend homes need this once per smoke season, usually late September after the last event.
“Can I just use vinegar on the white spots?”
Not on Bend glass. Vinegar is a weak acid that reacts with calcium carbonate and can etch the deposit deeper into the surface instead of lifting it. On mineral-heavy irrigation deposits it frequently makes the haze permanent. Professional restoration uses a buffered compound and polishing pad that lifts the mineral without attacking the glass.
“How do I know if my window cleaner actually fixed the haze or just washed over it?”
Run the same test after they leave. Fingertip drag at the bottom third of the pane, then a low-sun look-through. If the haze is gone wet and dry, restoration worked. If it returns as the glass dries, they washed over bonded mineral without restoring it. Ask any cleaner before booking whether they patch-test for hard water.
Compare the results
Test result vs cause vs the service that actually fixes it
Three results, three causes, three different fixes. Matching them correctly is the difference between paying once and paying twice.
Gritty texture | White haze | Fog between panes | |
|---|---|---|---|
Fingertip test | Rough, sandy | Chalky, smooth | Smooth |
Low-sun look | Dust film | White band, lower third | Cloud inside the pane |
Wet test | Clears when wet | Clears wet, returns dry | Same wet and dry |
Cause | Pollen, dust, debris | Irrigation or well minerals | Failed IGU seal |
Fix | Standard clean | Hard water restoration | Glass unit replacement |
Who does it | Window cleaner | Window cleaner | Glass shop |
Typical Bend cost | $150–$350 | $200–$500 + clean | $150–$400 per unit |
Urgency | Book within weeks | Book now — etching risk | Budget replacement |
