Interior vs Exterior vs Full Window Clean: Which Do You Need?
Not every visit needs both sides. Exterior-only handles pollen and irrigation at half the cost when the inside is still clear. Interior-only makes sense in winter when exterior glass is frozen. A full clean resets everything. Here is how to pick — and the schedule most Bend homes end up on.
✓ Quote for whichever you need
✓ No pressure to book both
✓ Same crew, same standards
✓ Rain guarantee on exterior
The decision
The outside and inside of a Bend window get dirty for completely different reasons
Exterior glass in Bend takes pollen, volcanic dust, irrigation mineral, and wildfire smoke. It re-soils fast and predictably with the seasons. Interior glass takes fingerprints, cooking film, fireplace soot, and condensation residue. It soils slowly and mostly in winter when windows are closed. Because the two surfaces run on different clocks, cleaning them on the same schedule wastes money on one side or neglects the other.
Most Bend homeowners on a maintenance plan end up alternating: a full clean in spring, an exterior-only in fall, and an interior-only in midwinter if the house is heavily used. That three-visit pattern tracks what each surface actually needs.
The sections below explain when each option is the right call, what it includes, and what it costs. If you are booking a first clean on a new-to-you home or it has been more than a year, skip the decision — book the full clean and start the cycle from a clean baseline.
When to book each
Six situations and the option that fits
Match the situation, not the calendar.
First clean on a new home — full
Start from a clean baseline. Both sides, screens out, tracks vacuumed, seal inspection. Everything after this is maintenance.
After pollen ends in June — exterior
Ponderosa pollen is on the outside. The inside is still clear from spring. Exterior-only resets the glass before irrigation starts.
After irrigation stops in October — exterior
Five months of sprinkler mineral is on the outside. Clean it before the first freeze bonds it. Interior is usually still fine.
Midwinter — interior
Windows have been closed for months. Cooking film, fireplace soot, and condensation marks are inside. Exterior is frozen or salted. Interior-only keeps the house bright.
Pre-listing or pre-event — full
Photos and guests see both sides. A full clean two days before a photographer or party is the highest-return timing of the year.
After a smoke event — exterior
Smoke film is on the outside. It smears if wiped dry. Exterior-only with a degreasing wash handles it. Inside is unaffected if windows stayed closed.
Bend conditions
What each side of the glass collects in Central Oregon
The exterior runs on the weather. The interior runs on how you use the house.
Exterior — pollen and dust
Juniper from late February, ponderosa through May, volcanic dust on every windy day. This is the most visible soiling and the reason spring exterior cleans book out. It does not touch the inside. Cleaning frequency guide →
Exterior — irrigation mineral
May through October, sprinkler overspray on the bottom third of south-facing glass. Bonds in weeks in high-desert sun. Exterior-only in October removes it before winter locks it in.
Interior — heating season film
November through March, closed windows trap cooking vapor, wood smoke, and breath condensation. It builds as a faint haze on the inside that shows in low winter sun. Interior-only in January handles it.
Interior — traffic and hands
Sliding doors, kid-height glass, and windows near the kitchen collect prints and smudges year-round. Homes with dogs get nose prints at 18 inches. Heavy-use homes add an interior wipe mid-year.
What it costs
What each option costs in Bend
Roughly, exterior-only and interior-only each run half of a full clean. Two singles cost about the same as one full.
01
Exterior only
$90 to $200 for most Bend homes. Includes exterior glass, frames, screens washed, exterior tracks vacuumed, and a hard water assessment. Rain guarantee applies.
02
Interior only
$80 to $180 for most Bend homes. Includes interior glass, interior sills and tracks, and a wipe of interior frames. Needs access — a code, a lockbox, or someone home.
03
Full clean
$150 to $350 for most Bend homes. Both sides of every accessible pane, screens out and washed, tracks vacuumed then wiped, sills and frames, seal inspection, condition report.
You get one price for whichever option you book. If the crew finds the other side needs work, they tell you — they do not add it.
How it works
How the annual cycle runs on a typical Bend home
Step 1
Spring — full clean
April or May. Both sides, screens, tracks, seal check. Clears winter interior film and spring pollen in one visit.
Step 2
Summer — optional exterior
July, only for homes with heavy sprinkler contact or after a smoke event. Most homes skip this.
Step 3
Fall — exterior only
Late September or October after irrigation stops. Removes the summer mineral before the first freeze bonds it.
Step 4
Winter — interior only
January or February for heavily used homes. Restores light through closed windows. Skipped by many households.
Real questions
What Bend homeowners actually ask about interior vs exterior
Pulled from Central Oregon homeowner threads and answered for Bend conditions. No fluff — just what you need to decide.
“Do I really need the inside done? The outside is what looks dirty.”
Not every time. If the inside was done within the last six months and the house has not been through a heating season since, exterior-only is the right call and costs about half. If it has been more than a year, or you have been through a winter with the windows closed, the inside has a film you will not see until the outside is clean. Then you will notice it.
“Can I book exterior-only and have you do the screens?”
Yes. Screens are an exterior-access item — they come out of the window from outside on most Bend homes and get washed on the lawn. Exterior tracks get vacuumed too. What exterior-only cannot reach is the interior glass, interior sills, and the interior half of the track. Everything on the outside face of the window is included.
“Is it cheaper to do both at once or split them?”
About the same. Two singles run roughly the price of one full clean, sometimes slightly more because of two trip charges. The reason to split is timing, not price — the outside needs cleaning in spring and fall, the inside needs it in winter. Doing both at once means one side is cleaned before it needs it.
“Why is interior-only cheaper if it takes longer?”
It does not take longer on most homes. Interior work is at reach height with no pole, no ladder, and no screen removal. The exterior takes the equipment. Interior-only also skips hard water restoration, which is exterior-only. The main constraint on interior work is access, not time.
“We have a dog and small kids. The inside is always smudged. What schedule makes sense?”
Full clean in spring, exterior in fall, and an interior-only every four months. Nose prints and handprints at sliding doors are the fastest-soiling glass in the house, and a quick interior visit resets them. Some customers with heavy traffic book interior-only quarterly and the exterior twice a year. It works out to a visit every three months.
“Do you clean the inside of the tracks on exterior-only?”
The exterior track, yes. On a sliding window there are two channels — one the sash sits in from outside, one from inside. Exterior-only vacuums and wipes the outer channel, which is where needles and pollen collect. The inner channel is done on interior or full cleans. Both tracks are done on every full clean.
