How Often Should You Clean Windows in Bend, Oregon?

Twice a year for most Bend homes. Once after spring pollen season ends in late April or May. Once in early fall after smoke season closes in October. That covers the two biggest soiling events of the year and keeps your glass, screens, and tracks in good shape between visits.

But “most homes” is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Homes with sprinklers hitting the glass, on well or canal water, under heavy ponderosa, or facing south and west at elevation need a third visit — sometimes a fourth. Vacation rentals and storefronts follow entirely different schedules. Here is the full breakdown by property type, exposure, and what the glass actually faces. For month-by-month timing, see the Bend window cleaning calendar.

Signs you are not cleaning often enough

  • White spots that do not wipe off — mineral has started bonding. Catch it now or it etches permanently.
  • Yellow film on south-facing glass — pollen has bonded after getting damp and dried by sun.
  • Tracks visibly packed with debris — grit is wearing on your sash seals every time the window moves.
  • Screens look grey instead of transparent — pollen and dust are filtering back onto clean glass with every breeze.
  • Interior glass looks fine but exterior is hazy — smoke film or mineral coat that needs a proper wash, not a wipe.
  • You cannot remember the last time windows were cleaned — if it has been more than 12 months in Bend, you are overdue.

If three or more of these describe your glass, you are at least one full cleaning behind schedule.

The one-clean-per-year rule

If budget or schedule limits you to a single annual clean, make it October. By then pollen is done, irrigation has stopped, smoke season has passed, and grit has not yet frozen into the tracks. One October clean resets the glass for winter better than any other month.

The second most important visit is late April or May, once pollen has tapered. If you add a second visit, that is the one. Set up a maintenance plan →

What homeowners ask about cleaning frequency

“Is twice a year really enough, or is that just what companies recommend to sell two cleans?”

For a typical Bend home without heavy sprinkler or pine exposure, twice a year genuinely keeps the glass and tracks in good condition. More than that is only justified if your glass faces specific soiling — irrigation, wells, heavy pine, or heavy smoke years.

“We just moved to Bend from the coast. The windows get dirty so much faster here.”

Coastal climates are damp year-round, so rain rinses glass naturally. Bend gets 8 to 12 inches of precipitation a year, and between rains, UV bakes every deposit onto the surface. The high desert is genuinely harder on glass than the coast.

“Can I just do the outside and skip interior cleaning?”

Exterior-only is a valid option between full cleans — it is faster, cheaper, and does not need interior access. But it cannot include screens or interior tracks, which are where much of the soiling accumulates. Alternating exterior-only and full cleans is a practical compromise.

“Is there a best day of the week to schedule?”

Weekdays are easier to schedule and often have more availability. Avoid cleaning on days when your irrigation runs — if sprinklers hit the glass an hour after we leave, the spots are back. Tell us your irrigation schedule when you book.
